Taos, New Mexico appeals to both cultural and adventurous travelers. Its historic district is home to galleries, shops, and fine restaurants, and visitors can also explore the valley of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains by hiking, biking, horseback riding, and rock climbing. Hot air balloon rides are another popular pastime.

I’ve tracked down several properties that offer a good value for your weekend getaway, each with reasonable prices and/or a little something extra to make your stay memorable.

The Dreamcatcher Bed & Breakfast charges from $94 to $134 per night. There are seven guest rooms, each with a private bath, a fireplace, a coffee maker, and satellite television. The inn is a short walk from the Taos Plaza.Hotel La Fonda is the only hotel in the historic Taos Plaza. The property has 19 guest rooms and five suites; rates range from $119 to $249 per night. Some rooms have fireplaces and/or a view of the Plaza. Additionally, the hotel has an art gallery featuring D.H. Lawrence’s “Forbidden Art” collection, the only exhibit of its kind worldwide. The three guest houses at Casa Gallina Inn have fully equipped kitchens, allergy-sensitive bedding, desktop computers with high-speed Internet access, and CD/DVD players.
