American has matched many of the fares included in Southwest’s latest systemwide sale. Fares start at $96 round-trip, and cities include Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Nashville.

American’s sale is spotty. Southwest beat its Dallas/Las Vegas fare, Alaska offered a lower San Francisco/Los Angeles fare, and American itself, AirTran, and Northwest topped the sale price for travel between Philadelphia and Miami. Southwest offered similar fares for the Chicago/Nashville and Los Angeles/Chicago routes, and Northwest also matched the latter. Northwest offered the same price for travel between Baltimore and Santa Barbara. American is facing a lot of competition from Southwest and other airlines, so be sure to compare prices before you book.
