South African Literature

Growing up I lived and breathed the work of South African writers like Stuart Cloete, who chronicled the history of white South Africa in factual novels that appealed very much to a child steeped in the ideals of empire. Cloete related rather one sided tales of the Great Trek, the Anglo/Zulu War, the Anglo/Boer War, as well as the various sideshows and sub-adventures that all went to build the complex human mythology of white South Africa.

British Airways is offering up to $200 off round-trip flights worldwide through early September. The discount is available to registered users only.

It’s unusual to see such a substantial discount, so this offer is a great incentive to book with British Airways. Even so, you should compare British Airways’ fares (including the discount) with prices available on the same dates from other airlines to see if you’re getting a good deal.

£19 Travelodge Rooms during July and August.

© svonogIf you're thinking that you can't afford a Summer holiday, Travelodge may change your mind with their Saver room rate of only £19 a night for rooms at selected UK Travelodges between the 27 June to 31 August 2008. This rate is non refundable and non transferable. What a bargain but you'd better book soon as I have a feeling this is going to be a very popular offer and you must book by the 29th June. Their family rooms sleep 2 adults and 2 kids. I doubt if you can find a cheaper room anywhere else in the UK, especially with a private bathroom. Travelodge is my favourite UK budget hotel chain.

Through Friday, AirTran is offering sale fares starting at $59 one-way or $118 round-trip. Flights to Baltimore, Philadelphia, Orlando, and San Juan are included.

AirTran’s sale fares were among the best available for five of the six routes I checked, although US Airways matched many of AirTran’s prices. AirTran itself, as well as Northwest and United, beat the sale fare for travel between Philadelphia and Orlando. This is a solid deal, but you’ll have to book by tomorrow to take advantage of it.

The Choice Hotels brand (including Cambria Suites, Clarion, Comfort Inn, Comfort Suites, EconoLodge, MainStay Suites, Quality Inn, Rodeway Inn, Sleep Inn, and Suburban) is offering a 15 percent discount to coaches, families, friends, and players of Little League Baseball.

The deal

The Little League rates seem to be a bit misleading. You don’t actually have to play Little League baseball in order to qualify for the 15 percent discount, you just have to say you like it. The front desk may ask for proof of eligibility, but everyone should qualify. Plus, all proceeds from your stay go back to support the game. Charity and a discount: What’s not to like?

This recent post on a new travel deals site called cheaptravelscout.com caught our eye because it deals with a new bus company that goes from Los Angeles to Las Vegas at prices starting at $1 and going up to $34, it seems. With airfare getting out of hand these days, this company might be worth looking in to, especially if you can book way in advance to get one of the super cheap fares.
