Spirit is offering “Early Bird” sale fares for domestic and international travel. Fares start at $78 round-trip, and cities include Ft. Lauderdale, Myrtle Beach, Cancun, and Santo Domingo.

If you prefer to plan ahead, Spirit’s deal is worth a look. Spirit’s domestic fares were the best available for two of the three routes I compared, but US Airways beat Spirit’s price for the Boston/Myrtle Beach route. As always, you should compare Spirit’s fares from those of its competitors before you book.

JetBlue has commenced service between Ft. Lauderdale and Santo Domingo, and is promoting the new route with fares starting at $99 one-way or $198 round-trip.

JetBlue’s sale prices were the best available for many of the dates I spot-checked. American beat JetBlue’s round-trip fare by $20 in one case, but JetBlue’s nonstop flight was a mere two-and-a-half hours, compared to American’s eight-hour one-stop itinerary. You can expect JetBlue’s fares to be among the cheapest for travel to Santo Domingo through May, but it’s still not a bad idea to do a quick fare-comparison before booking.
