The air pass seems to be a great deal for travelers planning an extended trip to the South Pacific. Before you book, however, it’s a smart idea to price flights from Los Angeles or New York and well as individual flights between the destinations to ensure that the pass makes sense for your itinerary.

The deal

The pass starts at $999, not including taxes and fees, for travel from Los Angeles when you book a six-night stay at Starwood hotels and resorts in the South Pacific, or $1,098 from New York. Without the hotel stays, the pass costs $1,099 from Los Angeles, or $1,198 from New York departures.

Book tickets by June 30, for travel through October 31. The pass requires a seven-day minimum stay, and the maximum stay is 60 days.

I’ve tracked down several properties that offer a good value for your weekend getaway, each with reasonable prices and/or a little something extra to make your stay memorable.

Visit the Inn at the Moors before June 20 and you’ll be able to save. “Quiet season” weekend rates range from $119 to $179 and include daily breakfast. After June 20, prices jump to between $159 and $225. Rooms have free high-speed Internet access, cable television, and mini refrigerators. The property also offers water views, a heated pool, and free parking. A two-night minimum weekend stay is required.Dyer’s Beach House also offers reduced rates for early summer visitors. Book a stay before June 27 and pay $145 per night; visit between June 28 and August 31 and the rate jumps to $225. Every room has a water view, free high-speed Internet access, cable television, free parking, and a private entrance.The Carpe Diem Guesthouse offers upscale bed-and-breakfast accommodations. Rooms range from $185 to $310 per night and include daily breakfast, complimentary sherry and port, afternoon refreshments, a wine and cheese hour, video library, bike storage, parking for one vehicle, and use of the property’s spa area, steam room, and sauna. Rooms have luxury linens, bathrobes, and beach towels; some have fireplaces and/or whirlpool tubs.

Delta’s sale fares may offer good value for travelers departing from New York’s JFK airport, but you’ll have to shop around and compare fares to be sure.

I've read some complaints recently that there are too many Bank Holidays clustered between Easter and May, five out of the nine by the end of May, and then nothing for months. As a freelance and self employed worker my work schedule is flexible but when I was an employee I must say that I would have preferred to ditch the prescribed Bank Holidays and choose when to have my own holidays. I was in the Peak District one August Bank Holiday and it was mayhem, awful congestion on the roads, nowhere to park, pedestrians spilling onto the pavements in villages. I vowed never to drive around on Bank Holidays in future.
