It literally looks as though the River Rhine in Germany is on fire during the spectacular firework displays over the next few months. The are parades of illuminated boats and fireworks and stalls selling food, wine and beer.

Domestic flights through early November are on sale from AirTran. Fares start at $49 one-way or $98 round-trip, and Atlanta, Orlando, and New Orleans are featured.

AirTran’s sale fares are among the best available for most of the routes I checked, but other carriers including American, Midwest, Northwest, United, and US Airways are offering similar prices. AirTran itself beat the sale fare for travel between New York and New Orleans, and US Airways beat AirTran’s price for the Dallas/Orlando route, so you should still compare fares before booking to ensure you get the best deal for your travels.

Through Thursday, Southwest is offering sale fares starting at $69 one-way or $138 round-trip. Cities include Chicago, Ft. Lauderdale, Las Vegas, and Orlando.

The best deals among the routes I checked were for travel on the Dallas/Harlingen and Islip/Ft. Lauderdale routes, but other airlines beat Southwest’s prices for the remaining cities. AirTran, Northwest, United, and US Airways topped Southwest for travel between Baltimore and Orlando, while Frontier and US Airways offered lower Los Angeles/Albuquerque fares. JetBlue beat Southwest’s Oakland/Las Vegas fare, Northwest had a better Providence/Chicago fare, and USA3000 offered a lower price for the Chicago/Ft. Myers route. Since other airlines’ prices were lower than the sale fares in many cases, you should be sure to shop around before you book.

Domestic flights are on sale in Virgin America’s new offer. Fares start at $59 one-way or $118 round-trip, and New York, San Diego, and Seattle are featured.

Virgin America’s sale fares were hit-or-miss for the routes and dates I compared. The best deals I found were for travel on the Los Angeles/Seattle, San Francisco/San Diego, and Seattle/San Diego routes, although Alaska matched the latter. But, Frontier beat both New York fares and Northwest offered a lower price for travel between Washington, D.C., and San Francisco. Overall, this sale is worth considering but you’ll have to shop around to ensure you get the best deal.

Another great contribution from South African industry pro and travel writer Sean Ross.

The Sardines Arrive

KNZ Sardine Fever

It’s a real gamble setting a festival date to celebrate the expected arrival of a natural phenomenon, in this case the greatest shoal of fish on earth, many months in advance of their arrival. And even more so when this incredible mass of millions of sardines failed even to arrive at all in 2007 and 2006. So it was with great relief to the KwaZulu-Natal tourism authorities when the first shoals were spotted off the South Coast a day ahead of the June 13 launch of this increasingly popular Sardine Festival.
