Metropolis, Illinois, may be best known as Superman’s hometown, and June is a great time to visit. The annual Superman Celebration commemorates its 30th anniversary June 12 through 15 with celebrity appearances and other entertaining events. About three hours from St. Louis, the Metropolis area is also visited for gambling, the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, and outdoor recreation.

The newly opened Doubletree Hotel Princeton has an eco-friendly Doubletree Now Planted package including accommodations and a “tree in a box” kit to take home. Additionally, the hotel will make a $2 donation for each reservation to the Arbor Day Foundation.

The value of this package depends on whether you’re willing to prepay for your stay. When I checked, the promotional rate was among the cheapest of all nonrestricted rate classes. However, if you’re willing to prepay for your room, you can benefit from “Net Direct” reduced rates starting at $119 per night. If you’re the flexible type and don’t want to prepay (or if you’d like the tree kit), go with the package. If you’re willing to pay up front, you may want to consider booking the Net Direct rate and making a donation on your own.

Through Thursday, Southwest is offering sale fares from $40 one-way or $80 round-trip. Flights to Ft. Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Orlando, and San Francisco are included in the sale.

Southwest’s sale fares were among the best available for nearly every route I checked, although other airlines, including AirTran, American, and US Airways, offered similar deals. JetBlue beat Southwest’s Oakland/Las Vegas fare by about $20. This deal includes competitive prices, but you should still compare fares from other carriers before you book.

Summer flights to Maui are on sale from United. Fares start at $748 round-trip, and departures are available from Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, and Washington, D.C.

The best deals I found among the fares I compared were for travel on the Chicago and Washington, D.C., routes. However, Alaska beat United’s Boston, Newark, and Spokane fares, while US Airways offered a lower fare for travel between Las Vegas and Kahului. Although this sale includes a few good deals, you should shop around before booking to ensure you get the best price for your route.
