American has announced a new offer for domestic travel. Fares start at $298 round-trip, and Austin, New Orleans, and New York are featured.

The best deals among the routes I checked were for travel on the Chicago/Lafayette and Shreveport/Austin routes, although Northwest matched the former. American itself, as well as AirTran, Frontier, Northwest, and United, beat the sale prices for the remaining routes. American may offer a competitive fare for your travels, but you should still shop around before booking because it may not be listed in this offer.

Through Thursday, Southwest is offering sale fares starting at $40 one-way or $80 round-trip. Cities include Austin, Ft. Lauderdale, Las Vegas, and San Francisco.

Southwest’s sale fares were the best available for four of the seven routes I compared, including Chicago/Pittsburgh, Dallas/Austin, Hartford/Orlando, and Islip/West Palm Beach. American matched the Dallas/Austin fare.
