Manitou Springs, just outside Colorado Springs and about an hour south of Denver, offers an ideal base for exploring nearby Pikes Peak and the Garden of the Gods. And there are plenty of in-town distractions as well: Once you’re off the trails, spend a weekend touring art galleries, horseback riding, or sampling fine cuisine at a local restaurant.

The Pay Your Birth Year Package gives discounts for two-night stays: Get your first night starting at $199, then pay for the second night at a price equal to your birth year. For example, guests born in 1955 would pay $55 for the second night, 1978 would pay $78, etc.

Spirit has announced a weekend-long sale with fares starting at $38 round-trip. Myrtle Beach, Orlando, and San Juan are featured in the offer.

Spirit’s sale fares were the best available for four of the six routes I compared. AirTran, American, and JetBlue beat Spirit’s Orlando/San Juan fare, and USA3000 offered a better price for travel between Chicago and Ft. Myers. Northwest had a matching price for the Detroit/Myrtle Beach route. Since Spirit is facing some competition, you should compare fares before you book.

The Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina offers a Sheraton Family Package—Kids Eat Free that includes lodging, a welcome snack for the kids, one in-room movie each night, free meals (for kids under 12) when accompanied by a paying adult, and a late 4 p.m. checkout. Advertised rates start at $229 per night, but the best I was able to find for spring weekends was $249. That rate, however, still works out to be a good deal.

Cherry Valley Lodge, just outside Columbus in Newark, Ohio, offers a Wild Waterpark Works package including two nights’ accommodations and four two-day passes to the on-site CoCo Key Water Resort. Advertised rates start at $388 per night, but I was unable to find that price for stays in spring. The quoted rate of $418, however, still works out to be a good deal.
