Italy

Italy flights are on sale from Eurofly starting at $499 round-trip. Destinations include Bologna, Naples, and Rome, and departures are available only from New York (JFK).

When I checked, Eurofly’s $499 sale fares were still available on every route except New York/Bari and New York/Palermo. Nonstop fares totaled $574 with taxes and fees, and connecting flights totaled $585—definitely worth considering for last-minute May travel. When you search for flights on Eurofly’s website, click on the calendar before you search. The dates highlighted in blue are the only dates for which fares are available.

$48

Southwest has announced a new domestic sale with fares starting at $48 one-way or $96 round-trip. Cities include Austin, Las Vegas, Orlando, and San Francisco, and this offer is available through Thursday.

Three of the seven sale fares I compared were the best available, but two were beaten by Southwest’s competitors. United, US Airways, and Virgin America beat Southwest’s San Francisco/Las Vegas fare, and US Airways offered a lower price for travel between Los Angeles and Seattle. Also, Midwest matched Southwest’s Dallas/Denver fare, and Frontier and US Airways had similar fares for the Chicago/San Francisco route.

Flights to and from the Midwest are on sale from United. Fares start at $118 round-trip, and Austin, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco are included.

United’s fares were the best available for nearly every route I checked, the only exception being the Lansing/Los Angeles route, where Northwest offered a better price. Although this is a good deal, you should still do a quick fare comparison before you book.

Zimbabwe: The End of the Beginning

I have noticed quite a few comments finding their way back to the site regarding Zimbabwe, Mugabe, and the general state of things between the Limpopo and the Zambezi. While this is a travel site and not a political blog, the two concepts have a certain symbiosis thanks to the fact that politics in the liberation zone often has cultural overtones, so let me air my own thoughts on Mugabe, for what they are worth, and how things are and how they went wrong.
