Giant’s Castle Game Reserve

Continuing on with the theme of gracious accommodation and civilized pursuits, I am returning to the Drakensberg, and this time to Giants Castle Game Reserve. As with the Royal Natal National Park, and Cathedral Peak, the dominant themes here are walking, climbing and horse riding, with the usual emphasis on bird-watching and gorgeous seasonal floral displays. Also, of course, there is the celebrated vista, which differs within the Giant’s Castle Game Reserve only inasmuch as it is characterised this time by a grassy plateau among deep river valleys pressed up against the sheer cliffs of the escarpment.

Flights within the U.S. and to Puerto Rico and Mexico are on sale from Continental. Fares start at $96 round-trip, and destinations include Atlanta, New Orleans, San Juan, and Mexico City.

Since Continental did not list travel dates for this deal, I compared several sale fares with fares from other airlines available over a wide date range this spring. Continental’s best deals were for travel on the Baltimore/Cleveland and Boston/Newark routes, though US Airways matched the latter. Continental beat its own price for travel between Houston and New Orleans, while AirTran and Delta offered lower Newark/Atlanta fares and United had a better price for the Newark/San Juan route.

United’s latest domestic sale highlights golf destinations including Myrtle Beach, Palm Springs, and Tucson. Fares start at $100 round-trip for travel through mid-June.

United’s sale fares were the best available for three of the five fares I compared, although Northwest matched its Boston/Myrtle Beach fare, and AirTran and American matched its Washington, D.C./Raleigh price. However, Alaska beat United’s San Francisco/Palm Springs fare and AirTran, American, and Northwest offered better deals for travel between Los Angeles and Richmond. This offer includes some good deals, but you should compare fares to ensure you get the best price for your route.
