What makes you read a travel blog?

Stirling Castle by europealacarte

Free entry to beautiful Scottish castles and other historic buildings this weekend, the 12 – 13 April 2008. You can visit all the wonderful properties owned by Historic Scotland including Edinburgh and Stirling castles. So if you're in the mood for a day out exploring Scottish architecture, history and culture it wont' cost you a penny. This is a great offer as it can cost an average of £8 per adult to get into each site. If you choose several sites which are fairly close together you could easily fit in a few visits over the weekend. The Free Weekend page on the Historic Scotland site lists the properties by area. so it's easy to work an itinerary. Give yourself time for a lunch break and don't try to pack too much into one day. You want to have time to wander around the sites, not be madly dashing from one to another.

Sick of headline cheap fares?

© http2007I received an email from Jet2.com this morning with details of their cheap fares on their” April offers from £4.99″. I had a look at their site and there only saw 4 flights at £4.99, Leeds Bradford to Amsterdam, Belfast and Paris and Blackpool to Belfast. I decided to investigate what the actual return fare would be and selected Leeds Bradford to Paris. I looked at the flexible date search for April. There were several dates predominately Monday to Wednesdays in the 2nd half of the month displaying £0.99 fares. However the cheapest return fares were £9.99. I choose an outward flight on Monday 28 April but the 99p fare was only available on the flight departing at 18.30, the 07.50 fight cost £14.99. so either effectively lose a day of pay another £14. The return flight on Wednesday 30 April departing at 21.40 cost £9.99. Total price displayed at this stage was £37.98, £10.98 for the fare and £27 taxes with a warning underneath that this excluded card fees and fuel supplement. So how can they get away with calling it total price? I went for hand baggage only but it's £6 per hold bag. The next page revealed that it the fuel supplement was another £6.44 and debit card fee £2 and credit card fee £4. Therefore the lowest possible fare comes in at £46.62, still pretty good value but being realistic for short break you'd really need to take the earlier outward flight to maximise your time in Paris and that would push the price up to £60.62. I don't know about you but I'd much rather that the adverts displayed the actual total lowest possible return fare. Do you agree?

Alaska

Posted in Travel Deals by on the April 7th, 2008

Flights to and from Anchorage are on sale from United. Fares start at $356 round-trip for travel through mid-June.

United’s prices are hit-or-miss. The sale prices on the New York, Philadelphia, and San Francisco routes were the best available, but the other fares I compared were beaten. Delta offered lower Boston and Washington, D.C., fares, while US Airways had a better Los Angeles price. United itself, along with Alaska, American, Frontier, Northwest, and United topped the sale price for travel from Chicago. You may find a competitive price in this sale, but you’ll have to compare fares before booking to be sure.

Flights to Beijing and Shanghai are on sale from United. Fares start at $778 round-trip for travel through late June.

Though United’s China fares may be competitive, you should shop around before booking to ensure you find the best price for your route.

Denver

United is offering sale fares for travel to and from Denver. Fares start at $110 round-trip, and travel is valid through late April.

The best deals among the routes I checked were for travel on the Kansas City and Indianapolis routes, though Northwest matched both routes and AirTran matched the latter one.

The Essex Inn in Tappahannock, Virginia (an hour from Richmond, two hours from Washington, D.C.) recently became a member of the Virginia Green Lodging association. To celebrate, the innkeepers are offering 20 percent off to travelers willing to participate in their Green Tappahannock Scavenger Hunt. Rates (before the discount) range from $149 to $189 per night, depending on room class and availability, and include full breakfast. All accommodations have private baths and fireplaces or woodstoves.

Resort

TradeWinds Island Resorts in St. Pete Beach, Florida, is offering 30 percent off stays at either the Island Grand or Sandpiper properties. Rates start at $199 per night at the Sandpiper, or $229 at the Island Grand.

If you can take some time off this spring, this promotion is worth considering—but be sure to check the room class to ensure you’re getting a good deal. When I checked prices, some rooms had better discounts than others, and while most offered some type of savings, 30 percent didn’t seem like a hard-and-fast rule. For example, I found savings of 34 percent for a “gulffront suite” at the Sandpiper, an excellent value, but a discount of just 8 percent for a standard hotel room at the Island Grand. Doing a bit of research will enable you to determine the best deal for your getaway. Also note that the resort charges a $25 fee per night to cover amenities.

Cabell County, West Virginia (about four hours from Roanoke, Virginia, and two hours from Lexington, Kentucky), is home to a thriving arts scene. May brings the annual festival at the historic Heritage Farm Museum and Village, or check out the happenings at Marshall University, C. Fred Edwards Conservatory at the Huntington Museum of Art, or the Huntington Symphony Orchestra.
