Galena

Galena, a charming small town in Illinois (three hours from both Chicago and Milwaukee), offers a relaxing retreat in spring. Spend a weekend here antique shopping, enjoying luxurious treatments at a day spa, or touring local art galleries for one-of-a-kind souvenirs.

I’ve tracked down several properties that offer a good value for your weekend getaway, each with reasonable prices and/or a little something extra to make your stay memorable.

JetBlue

Posted in Destinations by on the February 27th, 2008

Through Friday, JetBlue is offering sale fares starting at $39 one-way or $78 round-trip. The sale highlights JetBlue’s cross-country routes and newly announced service, and destinations include Boston, Las Vegas, New York, and San Francisco.

JetBlue’s sale fares were the best available for five of seven routes I checked, though airlines including AirTran, American, Continental, Frontier, Midwest, Northwest, United, and US Airways matched its prices. US Airways beat JetBlue’s Newark/Orlando fare, and Frontier and US Airways topped JetBlue for travel between Washington, D.C., and San Diego. JetBlue may offer a competitive fare for your route, but other airlines have similar prices so you should shop around before booking.

Delta

Posted in Travel Deals by on the February 27th, 2008

Delta has joined AirTran in offering a domestic sale for travel through early November. Fares start at $98 round-trip, and the deal features Atlanta and New York.

AirTran offered better prices for the Atlanta/Savannah, Charlotte/New York, Los Angeles/Atlanta, and New York/Las Vegas routes. US Airways also offered lower prices for the Atlanta/Savannah and Los Angeles/Atlanta routes. AirTran, US Airways, and Northwest had the same prices as Delta for the remaining two routes, as did JetBlue for travel between New Orleans and New York. Overall, AirTran’s prices were better than Delta’s, so compare fares between the two airlines and other competitors before booking.

CapeTown: The Mother City

There are a handful of highly cosmopolitan cities that decorate the global travel map – Rio, Sydney and Buenos Aires to name but a few – that all have in some way the attributes of beauty, grandeur, romance and fine living. The common perception of Africa, however, tends to preclude a lot of these qualities, but it often comes as a very pleasant surprise to the fist time visitor to the continent to find that amongst these international urban jewels is the South African city of Cape Town.
