Spirit has announced a $48 discount on round-trip flights departing in February and from mid-April through October.

Spirit has doubled its discount from the usual $24 discount to $48. If you’re already planning to book a flight on Spirit, this offer is a nice perk. Before you book, however, compare fares to ensure you can’t find a better price elsewhere, even with the discount.

Continental itself, as well as AirTran, Frontier, Midwest, Northwest, United, and US Airways, beat the sale prices for the routes I compared. You may do better than this sale, so shop around before you book.

Through Friday, Frontier is offering U.S., Mexico, Canada, and Costa Rica sale fares. Prices start at $98 round-trip for travel through mid-May.

Frontier’s domestic fares were hit-or-miss for the routes I compared. The Albuquerque and Chicago fares were among the best available, although airlines including American, Continental, Northwest, and United matched. American beat Frontier’s Orlando fare, while US Airways offered a better price for travel to and from Los Angeles. Frontier may offer a good price for your route, but you’ll have to shop around to be sure.
