AirTran has announced a new sale with fares starting at $39 one-way or $78 round-trip. Destinations include Miami, Orlando, Newark, and Detroit.

AirTran’s sale fares were the best available for four of the six routes I checked. US Airways beat its New York/Detroit fare, while AirTran itself, Continental, Northwest, United, and US Airways topped the sale price for travel between Baltimore and West Palm Beach. Overall, this is a solid deal but you should shop around before booking to ensure you get the best deal for your route.

American’s new domestic offer competes with a similar sale from AirTran. Fares start at $78 round-trip for travel through mid-May.

AirTran beat American’s sale fares for travel on the Baltimore/St. Louis and Dallas/Ft. Lauderdale routes, and offered the same prices for the Atlanta/Miami, Boston/Atlanta, and Chicago/Minneapolis routes. US Airways also beat the Baltimore and Dallas routes, as did Midwest for Baltimore. Airlines including Continental, Midwest, Northwest, United, and US Airways matched American’s prices for many of the routes included in this sale as well, and Frontier beat American’s price for travel between New York and Las Vegas. American is facing a lot of competition, particularly from AirTran, so shop around before you book.
