Alaska has announced a new domestic deal for travel through mid-February. Fares start at $49 one-way or $98 round-trip, and destinations include Seattle, Portland, and Reno. Southwest has a similar sale.

Alaska’s fares were the best available for five of six routes I compared, though American, United, and US Airways came close to the sale prices in a few cases. Frontier, United, and US Airways beat Alaska’s fare for travel between Los Angeles and Portland. This is a solid deal overall, but you should always compare prices before you book.

US Airways is offering up to 10 percent off flights to popular ski destinations in the U.S. and Canada. Fares start at $250 round-trip, and cities include Aspen, Telluride, and Calgary.

The best deals among the routes I checked were for the Los Angeles/Telluride and Santa Ana/Aspen routes. Other airlines, including Frontier, United, and US Airways itself beat the sale fares for the remaining routes. You may find a decent price in this deal, but you should always compare fares before you book.

Flights to Europe are on sale from Lufthansa. Fares start at $372 round-trip, and London, Barcelona, Dublin, and Florence are included.

Lufthansa itself, as well as Air France, Alitalia, American, Austrian, British Airways, Continental, Delta, KLM, Lufthansa, Northwest, United, and US Airways, beat the sale prices for the routes I compared over a wide date range. Since there is a lot of competition among the airlines for winter and spring flights, you should shop around before booking.
