Florida

AirTran has announced a Florida sale, including fares to Orlando, Miami, and Ft. Lauderdale. Fares start at $69 one-way or $138 round-trip.

AirTran beat its own sale fares on every route I checked, sometimes by a significant margin. Other airlines including American, Northwest, United, and US Airways matched AirTran’s low prices on some fares. As always, it pays to compare fares before you book.

Winter

United is offering winter Europe sale fares from $442 round-trip. Destinations include Paris, Rome, and Dublin.

Airlines including Alitalia, American, bmi, British Airways, Continental, Delta, KLM, Lufthansa, Northwest, Swiss, US Airways, and United itself beat the sale prices for the routes and dates I checked. Since United has plenty of competition, you should compare fares from several carriers before you book.

Another One Bites The Dust

photo December 24, 2007 was indeed a hectic day for the tourism industry. MaxJet announced their Chapter 11 Banruptcy, then Travelscope Holiday Limited's services were cancelled, and I just read that VLM Airlines was sold to the Air France-KLM group. The news of the sale was announced on Christmas Eve in Antwerp, Belgium where the seat of Panta Holdings, owner of VLM Airlines is. “VLM Airlines is one of Europe's leading regional carriers catering principally for business travellers. The company operates a fleet of 18 Fokker 50 and one BAE 146. London City Airport is the hub for the majority of its flights and therefore VLM Airlines will actively cooperate with the regional carrier CityJet, a 100% subsidiary of Air France, which is already operating out of London City Airport.” Details of the sale were not disclosed. Flights to Dublin are on sale from US Airways. Fares start at $358 round-trip, and departures are available from Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, and several other U.S. cities.

US Airways itself, along with Air France, Continental, Delta, and Lufthansa, beat the sale prices for each of the routes I checked. While US Airways may have a competitive price for your route, you won’t find it listed in this sale. Shop around before booking to ensure you get a good deal for your itinerary.

London

Posted in Travel Deals by on the December 27th, 2007

Fall and winter flights to London are on sale from United. Fares start at $378 round-trip for travel through late March.

When I checked, Icelandair topped United for the Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C., routes. US Airways also had a better Washington, D.C., fare, as well as lower prices for the Chicago and San Francisco routes. Air Canada beat United’s Los Angeles fare. Since United is facing a lot of competition, shop around before you book.

The Country Inn & Suites by Carlson Jackson in Jackson, Tennessee, is participating in the brand’s Borders promotion. Book two or more consecutive nights and get a $15 Borders gift card. Rates in Jackson start at $92 per night and include breakfast.

When I priced non-promotional rates at the Jackson Country Inn & Suites, I was quoted a price of $89. The Borders package charges you an extra $3 for a $15 gift card, though you’ll have to wait four to six weeks for the card to be mailed to you.

The Homewood Suites by Hilton Corpus Christi has a Corpus Christi Aquarium Package including suite accommodations and two tickets to the Texas State Aquarium. The package starts at $139 per night.

While the savings aren’t substantial, you’ll get a better deal by booking the package rather than putting this getaway together on your own. Priced individually, the hotel room and aquarium tickets came to $146. With the package, you’ll save approximately 5 percent.
