I compared several providers’ offerings for six-night vacations to Rome in winter, testing departures from Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York, though other departure cities are available. Packages include airfare, accommodations, and hotel taxes. Except for Air France Holidays, packages include all additional taxes and fees for airfare.

Alaska has announced a new sale for domestic travel in December and early January. Fares start at $49 one-way or $98 round-trip, and destinations include Las Vegas, Seattle, and San Francisco.

The best deal among the routes I checked was for travel between Portland and Sacramento, though American matched Alaska’s price. Alaska and American, along with United and US Airways, beat the sale prices for travel on the other routes. Alaska may offer a good deal for your travels, but you’ll have to compare its everyday prices with those from other airlines to be sure.

Last-minute travel to Hawaii is on sale from American. Fares start at $586 round-trip, and destinations include Kauai, Maui, Oahu, and the Big Island.

Other airlines beat American’s Hawaii fares, in some cases by hundreds of dollars. Hawaiian has lower prices for the Los Angeles/Kona, Los Angeles/Lihue, and San Francisco/Honolulu routes. ATA and Continental topped American for travel between Los Angeles and Honolulu; ATA and Northwest had better Chicago/Honolulu fares; and American itself, Northwest, and United beat the sale price for travel between Dallas and Kahului. Skip this sale and be sure to compare fares from several airlines before you book.

Flights to Madrid are on sale from Delta. Fares start at $418 round-trip for travel from January through mid-March.

Delta has some of the lowest fares around for travel to Madrid, but they aren’t listed in this deal. Air France, American, Continental, KLM, Northwest, and US Airways also beat the sale prices for many of the routes I checked. Compare Delta’s everyday prices with fares from other airlines before you book.
