American’s new domestic offer competes with a similar sale from Southwest. Fares start at $134 round-trip, and cities include Chicago, Denver, and Miami.

American’s best deals were for the Providence/Chicago, Los Angeles/Houston, and Oakland/Orlando routes, though Southwest had the same prices for the latter two. AirTran beat American for travel between Baltimore and New Orleans, Northwest offered a lower fare for the Dallas/Miami route, and Frontier and United had better prices for travel between Chicago and Denver. You may find a competitive price in American’s sale, but you should still compare fares before you book.

Winter flights on Alitalia are on sale from $491, including taxes and fees. Flights are available from Boston, Chicago, and New York, and destinations include Paris, Rome, Venice, and Athens.

Alitalia’s sale fares were the best available for many of the routes I checked. The only exceptions were for the New York/Paris and Boston/Rome routes, where Icelandair and US Airways had better deals respectively. This sale is worth considering, particularly because Alitalia includes taxes in its advertised prices—a welcome change from most airlines’ method of promoting low base fares, only to tack on hundreds of dollars in taxes when you book.

I compared several providers’ offerings for Orlando vacations, testing departures from Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York. Packages include airfare, four nights’ accommodations, and hotel taxes. Except as indicated, packages do not include additional taxes and fees for airfare.
