Tighter Security in Britain's Airports

photo New blast carriers, strict limits on access of public vehicles, and new baggage checks, are Prime Minister Gordon Brown's plan to build up Britain's defenses against car bombs at airports and train stations. A review by the terrorism minister recommended extra protection against car bombs. Nine hundred public spaces were reviewed after a failed bomb attack in the West End this year. As well as a result of the review of the July 2005 bombings that killed lots of innocent people. The new baggage checks will be introduced at major rail terminals. However, rules on limiting of access to airport and rail stations were not elaborated. via Seattle Times

Sail

Posted in Travel Deals by on the November 16th, 2007

Not only has Norwegian recently debuted a gleaming new ship, but you can cruise on the Norwegian Gem for next to nothing. Fares start at $179 for a one-night cruise to nowhere, but you can get a great deal on a nine-night transatlantic sailing with fares starting at $399 ($44 per night). The new ship has all the bells and whistles of the Jewel-class vessels, including a bowling alley, rock-climbing wall, and a wide selection of restaurants and bars.

If you’ve ever seen a Cirque du Soleil show, you know the performers take great risks with the tricks and stunts they do onstage. And while the company takes care to make sure its casts are safe, mistakes and accidents can happen.

Domestic

Posted in Airline tickets by on the November 16th, 2007

Delta is offering a new domestic sale that features Atlanta, Cincinnati, and Salt Lake City. Fares start at $218 round-trip.

Delta’s best deal among the routes I checked was for travel between Tampa and Cincinnati. Other airlines, including American, Continental, Frontier, Northwest, United, and US Airways, beat the sale prices for the remaining routes. Overall, Delta’s fares aren’t competitive, so you should shop around before booking.

U.K.

Bmi has announced a new sale featuring flights to the U.K. Fares start at $324 round-trip, and destinations include London, Manchester, and Edinburgh.

Other airlines, including Air France, American, British Airways, Continental, Delta, KLM, Northwest, United, US Airways, and bmi itself, beat the sale prices for all the routes I checked. You’ll likely find lower fares than these, so compare fares before you book.

Homeport

Anyone can take advantage of Carnival’s low prices for Mexico cruises, but West Coast residents can save even more by driving, rather than flying, to the Long Beach departure port. Sailings to Baja Mexico start at $239 per person.

The deal

Carnival’s four- to seven-night cruises may be convenient vacations for Southern California residents. If you live in another area of the country, think about tacking a few extra days on to your cruise vacation to explore the greater Los Angeles area.

London

British Airways is offering London sale fares and two free nights’ hotel from $338 round-trip. You can save an additional $20 by registering on British Airways’ website.

Though I found lower fares for each of the routes I checked, that doesn’t necessarily mean you should skip this sale. The fares I found were less than $200 cheaper than British Airways’ prices. That isn’t a lot when you factor in the cost of two nights’ accommodations in London, a notoriously expensive city.

Western

Flights to ski destinations in the western U.S. are on sale from United. Fares start at $294 round-trip, and destinations include Aspen, Vail, and Durango. American has a similar ski sale.

United’s best deals were the Los Angeles/Durango and San Diego/Aspen routes. American topped United for the remaining routes I checked, and Delta also had better deals for the Boston/Jackson Hole, Chicago/Montrose, and Washington/Steamboat Springs routes. Northwest also has the same price for the latter. There’s a lot of competition for travel out West this winter, so compare prices before you book.

Carnival

Carnival’s “Top Deals” page lists cruises with prices starting at $209 that depart next month. Last-minute bookings are best for travelers who do not need to fly to their departure port, as walk-up airfares can be pricey and flights can sell out.

The deal

When I checked, sample per-person fares for 2007 sailings included:
